Everything Coming to Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu & Amazon Prime Video in August 2020

The summer is almost over, but that doesn’t mean streaming services are slowing down their output any time soon. With the end of July on the horizon, services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+, and Prime Video are looking ahead to August, preparing to add a bunch of new movies and TV shows to their lineups for subscribers to check out. It’s no secret by now that streamers bring in new content each month, and August will be no exception to that trend.

Netflix has quite a few notable originals to look out for in August. These originals include Project PowerWizards: Tales of Arcadia, and the fifth season of Lucifer. The service will also be adding the first two seasons of Cobra Kai, as well as every episode of Legend of Korra.

HBO Max is getting a major wave of new DC titles over the course of August. Six live-action Batman movies will be added to the lineup on August 1st, alongside the first two seasons of the hit animated series Harley Quinn. August 6th will bring the release of the Doom Patrol Season 2 finale, followed by the arrival of Birds of Prey on August 15th.

ou can take a look below at the full list of every movie and TV show being added to major streaming services in August.

Josie and the Pussycats Set Blueprints Give a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Riverdale and More (Exclusive)

The 2001 Josie and the Pussycats movie has gone from a box office disappointment that baffled reviewers, to a cult classic with a hardcore fan base, in the couse of the last two decades. The film, which satirized the music industry at the turn of the century as well as American commercialism, is widely regarded now as being ahead of its time — even though a lot of people didn’t “get” the film upon release. With the 20th anniversary coming up next year, you can be sure there will be lots more chatter about the film — and we’re getting a head start.

ComicBook.com managed to get our hands on a set of photocopied blueprints, used during set construction for Josie and the Pussycats. The film had to transform a lot of fairly common places like strip malls and Virgin Megastores (if you’re under 20, ask your parents) into uniquely Riverdale locales.

That’s right — this is one of the first times Archie’s hometown made it to live action — and certainly the first time it was updated for the twenty-first century. That makes some of these blueprints fairly interesting.

The designs came from Jasna Stefanovic, a production designer who has also worked on movies like CubeThe Virgin Suicides, and Tideland.

Another thing that makes them interesting? The logos.

If you’ve seen the film, you know that corporate logos and product placement are omnipresent, appearing in virtually every scene and often in every shot in a scene. Fans of the movie will know that the production received no money for these placements — rather, it was part of the film’s commentary on commercialization in pop culture. Some companies even requested their logos not be used for the film, fearing audiences would associate them with the evil corporation at the heart of a plot against the youth of America.

That means these blueprints have some fun Easter eggs, including at least one big company whose logo is specifically barred from appearing in scenes…even though they were seemingly using a practical location where that company’s logo already appeared.

Earlier this year, we had a Quarantine Watch Party with Josie and the Pussycats filmmakers Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan. The film’s legacy has been a strange one over the years, and the directors — who don’t spend a lot of time on social media — were largely unaware of the movie’s cult classic status until a relatively recent screening party thrown by Alamo Drafthouse to celebrate the soundtrack’s first-ever vinyl release in 2017.

Check out (most of) what we found below!

THE AIRPORT

The airport

The film’s establishing shots take place at an airport, where the boy band DuJour (played by Seth Green, Donald Faison, Breckin Meyer, and Alexander Martin) are swarmed by adoring fans in a scene reminiscent of the Beatles’ arrival in America. Here’s a shot of both the overhead layout of the airport, and some of the signing they needed to make in set construction to make it look convincing.

penta

DUJOUR’S PLANE

DuJour's plane

A key scene in the film takes place in the private plane, where DuJour are abandoned to crash and die by their manager (Alan Cumming) after they become suspicious of a conspiracy in which he (and the pilot, apparently) are complicit. You can check out some looks at the DuJour plane here.

THE PUSSYCATS’ PLANE

The Pussycats' plane

The Pussycats has the same private plane as DuJour, basically (minus the crash damage), but there are a few tells (including the placement of characters in the mock-ups) that show that the “#2” jet is the Josie jet.

TIME FLIES

Time flies

There were a LOT of blueprints for various plane- and airport-related things in the batch we managed to get our hands on. That makes sense, because even though that wasn’t a huge portion of the film, it was a difficult portion to shoot.

WELCOME TO RIVERDALE

Welcome to Riverdale

The first half of the film happens largely in Riverdale, as the band plays, gets hassled by locals, and gets discovered by an agent with an ulterior motive.  You can see some of the signage for Riverdale here.

In one of the movie’s most memorable sequences, the band is LITERALLY climbing up the Billboard charts as their debut single takes off. And here’s the plans for how they did that.Depressing Toy Story Details Confirmed by Pixar Director

Depressing Toy Story Details Confirmed by Pixar Director

Though filled to the brim with imagination, fantastic ideas, and plenty of emotion, the world of Toy Story leaves a lot of questions left unanswered. Much like the Cars franchise, since the series began in 1996 with Pixar’s first movie there have been many thoughts and queries leveled at the creators. This week one of the biggest questions of the Toy Story films was finally answered though, and it came from a source that knows a thing or two about the series. It all began when one Twitter user posed the question, an intense discussion they were a part of, “Can the toys in Toy Story die or are they immortal?”

The answer to this question comes from Lee Unkrich, a Pixar employee who has deep roots in the series. Unkrich not only directed Toy Story 3 and co-wrote its story, but is credited as an editor on both Toy Story and Toy Story 2, a co-director on Toy Story 2, and an executive producer on Toy Story 4. Keep all that in mind when you hear his answer to the question, which is essentially “both.”

“They live as long as they exist,” Unkrich tweeted. “But if they were to be utterly destroyed? Say, in an incinerator? Game over.” Unkrich of course refers to the moment from his film Toy Story 3 and Woody and the toys prepare to meet their end before being saved by a group of Pizza Planet aliens.

The Toy Story franchise has seemingly come to an end once again on the big screen with 2019’s Toy Story 4, as the lead characters have found themselves separated for good and living their own lives. An animated spin-off lives on Disney+ with the freshly Emmy nominated series Forky Asks a Question. Another film could exist but as of last summer Pixar hadn’t reportedly talked it out just yet.

“Every film we make, we treat it like it’s the first and the last film we’re ever going to make,” producer Mark Nielsen said during Pixar press day for Toy Story 4. “So you force yourself to make it hold up. You don’t get in over your skis. Whether there’s another one? I don’t know. If there is, it’s tomorrow’s problem.

All four Toy Story films are now streaming on Disney+.

Mulan Rentals Confirmed to Last Length of Your Entire Disney+ Subscription

On Tuesday, Disney surprised movie fans with the announcement that, after multiple delays in its theatrical release due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, fans will finally get to see Mulan as a “premiere access” release through their Disney+ streaming service. The release will allow subscribers to watch the film from the comfort of their own home beginning September 4th for the price of $29.99. Almost immediately, some subscribers expressed concern about the cost, but now Disney has confirmed that it’s not simply a one-time rental for subscribers. They will have access to the film as long as they remain with Disney+.

According to Insider, a representative for Disney Plus confirmed that the $29.99 cost is not a one-time rental, saying that Disney+ subscribers “will have continuous access to the film for as long as they remain subscribers to the service.”

Mulan getting a Video On Demand release is something that comes as a surprise generally, but when one considers the entertainment landscape currently makes a great deal of sense. In a press release, Disney broke down its third-quarter losses due to the pandemic, reporting a $3 billion loss due to the impact to business. Releasing Mulan on VOD via Disney+ is one that will help offset losses stemming from the film’s lack of a theatrical release, though CEO Bob Chapek did note that Mulan will still screen in select markets with widely opened theaters.

But while Mulan is taking a rather unique approach to release, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up that Marvel’s Black Widow or even The New Mutants which is currently scheduled for theatrical release later in August will take a similar release approach. Chapek explained that Mulan is a one-off, albeit one that they find “very interesting”.

“We are looking at Mulan as a one-off as opposed to saying there’s a new business windowing model we are looking at,” Chapek explained. “That said, we find it very interesting to be able to take a new offering to consumers at that $29.99 price and learn from it and see what happens not only in terms of the uptick of the number of subscribers we got on the platform, but also the number of transactions we get on that PVOD offering.”

Mulan is now set for release on September 4th, both on Disney+ and wherever theaters are open.

Will you be checking out Mulan when it releases in September? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! If you haven’t signed up for Disney+ yet, you can try it out here.

Note: If you purchase one of the awesome, independently chosen products featured here, we may earn a small commission from the retailer. Thank you for your support.

Long touted by Disney as a feature that could have a massive box office haul both stateside and in China, Mulan will now receive a limited theatrical release wherever theaters are open, all in addition to being a premium add-on for subscribers of Disney+. Beginning September 4th, Mulan will be available for $29.99 for all Disney+ subscribers — and some fans aren’t having it.
